Hands pointing at data charts on a document, the revenue metrics a chief revenue officer salary package is built around

The key insight:

A Chief Revenue Officer's base salary is the smaller half of the story. The package is built to move with a revenue number, and the number is the negotiation.

Ask what a Chief Revenue Officer earns and quoting base salary is the least useful answer you can give. The CRO is hired to deliver a revenue number, and the package is built to move with it: a base that is lower than the seat's seniority would suggest, a bonus or commission tied to bookings or net revenue retention, and in many businesses an equity grant that carries a large share of the real value.

This guide sets out what JOH Partners benchmarks for Chief Revenue Officer base salary and total package across the US, UK, Singapore and the UAE, why the structure looks the way it does, and where the CRO differs from the Chief Commercial Officer. It sits alongside our benchmarks for the Chief Commercial Officer and for the sales director one rung below.

Base and total package, benchmarked separately

The table splits guaranteed base from total on-target package, which includes bonus or commission at target. Total package assumes reasonable attainment; it is a planning figure, not a guaranteed sum. The final column covers equity-weighted mandates, where long-term incentives become a large part of the value.

MarketBase salaryTotal on-target packageTop tier (equity-weighted, high-growth or PE-backed)

SingaporeSGD 280,000 to 420,000SGD 480,000 to 850,000SGD 900,000 to 1.4m+
United Arab EmiratesAED 1.0m to 1.8mAED 1.8m to 3.5mAED 3.6m to 5.5m+, where the title exists

Set these against our wider benchmarks. The generic director and executive band that JOH Partners publishes runs from USD 165,000 to 300,000 in the US as a total package, so a CRO base overlaps the top of that range while the CRO total sits well beyond it. The base-to-total ratio is also lower than for most chiefs: most C-suite roles run base at roughly two thirds of the package, whereas a CRO's base is closer to two fifths to a little over half.

Why the CRO package is mostly variable

Two structural reasons explain it, and both are visible in how the seat is hired.

The role is a number. A CRO is accountable for bookings, net revenue retention or net new annual recurring revenue, and those are measurable weekly. When the success metric is that visible, tying a large share of pay to it is the natural design. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics notes in its profile of top executives that total compensation for corporate executives often includes stock options and performance bonuses. The profile reports a median annual pay of USD 108,780 across all top executives, a figure that spans very small organisations and every industry. Read it as a reminder of how wide the category is, not as a benchmark for a CRO seat.

Performance-linked pay is increasingly disclosed. In the United States, the SEC's pay-versus-performance rule requires registrants to disclose how executive pay relates to company performance in proxy and information statements where executive compensation disclosure is already required. The rule exempts certain categories, including emerging growth companies and foreign private issuers, so the disclosure picture varies by business, but the direction is clear: the link between pay and results is now something a board is expected to be able to explain.

What moves a CRO's number

Five things explain most of the spread within each market band.

The metric. A CRO whose variable pay is tied to the number they control, such as bookings or net revenue retention, is on a fair structure. One tied to a number the CRO influences only partly is carrying risk they cannot manage. JOH Partners makes the same argument for commercial seats in the Gulf: pay should reflect the authority a commercial seat actually holds, and heavy variable pay tied to outcomes the executive cannot control can drive attrition.

Revenue base and growth stage. Scaling a growth-stage business from a modest base and defending a large mature book are different jobs and price differently at the same title.

Scope. A CRO who owns sales, marketing, customer success and revenue operations carries more than one who owns a single channel, and the package follows.

Accelerators and caps. The terms past 100 per cent of target decide the realistic upside more than the headline total does. Always ask about the accelerator, any cap and how quota is set before comparing two offers on total package alone.

Sector. Technology and software businesses generally price the CRO seat at the top of these bands, because revenue growth is the main driver of their value.

CRO versus CCO: one short distinction

The two titles are priced on the revenue they own, which is why the packages look alike. The difference is in the scope behind the number. A CRO is usually the owner of the whole revenue engine as a single accountable figure, most often in subscription and software businesses. A Chief Commercial Officer tends to have a broader and more varied remit, and whether that seat controls pricing is the question that decides what it should be paid. If the title on your offer is CCO, read our Chief Commercial Officer benchmarks rather than this page; we do not re-benchmark that seat here.

The Gulf and the UAE

In the Gulf the CRO title is less common than in US and UK technology businesses, and where it exists it tends to sit in technology scale-ups and regional headquarters of global software companies. The package structure differs from the US in three ways.

More cash, less equity. Packages are more often cash-weighted, with the variable component paid as a bonus rather than equity. Where equity exists, it is more likely to be a local scheme than a standard public-company grant.

Benefits matter. With no personal income tax in the UAE, housing, schooling and flights lift real take-home above the base. Our guide to GCC total compensation beyond base salary shows how to value them properly.

Read the scope, not the label. Titles vary more in the Gulf than almost anywhere. A "Chief Revenue Officer" may own a regional number, a global one or a single country, and the package should follow the scope.

Key Takeaways

  • A Chief Revenue Officer's base salary understates the role, because the package is built around variable pay and often equity tied to a revenue number.
  • JOH Partners benchmarks total on-target package at USD 500,000 to 1.0 million in the US, GBP 250,000 to 480,000 in the UK, SGD 480,000 to 850,000 in Singapore and AED 1.8 million to 3.5 million in the UAE.
  • CRO base is commonly around 40 to 55 per cent of the on-target total, a lower share than for most chiefs.
  • The metric the variable pay is tied to matters most: it should be a number the CRO actually controls.
  • The CRO usually owns the whole revenue engine as one number, while the CCO's seat turns on whether it controls pricing. Read the right benchmark for your title.
  • In the Gulf, packages are more cash-weighted and benefits lift real take-home above the base. Read the scope behind the title.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average Chief Revenue Officer salary?
There is no single meaningful average, because the CRO package is built around variable pay and equity, so a base figure understates the number. As a total on-target package, JOH Partners benchmarks a Chief Revenue Officer at USD 500,000 to 1,000,000 in the United States, GBP 250,000 to 480,000 in the United Kingdom, SGD 480,000 to 850,000 in Singapore and AED 1.8 million to 3.5 million in the UAE, with equity-weighted mandates in venture-backed and private equity-owned businesses running well above that.
How much of a CRO's pay is base salary?
Typically around 40 to 55 per cent of the on-target total, a lower share than for most C-suite roles. JOH Partners benchmarks CRO base at USD 250,000 to 400,000 in the US, GBP 150,000 to 240,000 in the UK, SGD 280,000 to 420,000 in Singapore and AED 1.0 million to 1.8 million in the UAE. The remainder is bonus or commission tied to bookings, net revenue retention or similar targets, and in many technology businesses an equity grant.
What is the difference between a CRO and a CCO?
A Chief Revenue Officer usually owns the whole revenue engine as one accountable number, typically sales, marketing, customer success and revenue operations, most often in subscription and software businesses. A Chief Commercial Officer has a broader and more varied commercial remit, and the real test of that seat is whether it controls pricing. Both are priced on the revenue they own, which is why the two packages look alike, but the CRO number is usually the more mechanical of the two.
Do Chief Revenue Officers get equity?
Commonly, particularly in venture-backed and private equity-owned technology businesses where revenue growth is the main driver of value. Treat any grant with the scrutiny you would give any equity: vesting schedule, leaver provisions, entry valuation and what happens on a change of control. In Gulf businesses, equity is less common and the package is more often cash-weighted with housing and other allowances.
What moves a CRO's compensation the most?
The revenue base and growth stage, the metric the variable pay is tied to, whether the CRO controls the levers behind that metric, the accelerator terms above target and the sector. The most important of these is the metric: a variable component tied to something the CRO cannot influence shifts performance risk onto the executive without giving them the means to manage it.
