The key insight:
In the UK a finance director is often the top finance job in the business. In a Gulf group it is usually the level below the CFO. The same title can sit a level apart on the pay ladder.
The first thing to settle about a finance director's pay is what the title means where you work. In the UK it is often the most senior finance job in a mid-sized business, and the holder is sometimes a statutory director of the company. In US and Gulf groups it usually sits one level below the CFO, with a divisional or functional remit. Two people with the same title can therefore sit a full level apart on the pay ladder, and a salary survey that mixes them tells you very little.
This guide sets out what finance directors are paid in the UK, US, Singapore and UAE in 2026, drawn from the executive search mandates JOH Partners runs for boards, investors and group holdings, which is to say from the seat where offers are agreed rather than from self-reported averages. It also covers what moves the number and what the step up to CFO involves. For the Gulf finance ladder in full, see our companion guide to CFO and finance salary in Dubai and the UAE.

Total annual package, meaning base plus annual bonus plus the cash-equivalent value of benefits, before any long-term incentive. These are JOH Partners benchmarks for 2026.
| Market | Finance director total annual package |
|---|---|
| United Kingdom | GBP 100,000 to 150,000 |
| United States | USD 175,000 to 300,000 |
| Singapore | SGD 180,000 to 320,000 |
| United Arab Emirates | AED 800,000 to 1.6m |
The finance director band sits inside the wider director range we publish across all functions, which runs from GBP 95,000 to 150,000, USD 165,000 to 300,000, SGD 170,000 to 325,000 and AED 700,000 to 1.6 million. For that wider picture, see director salary and executive compensation. The top of the finance director band matches the top of the general director band in the UK, the US and the UAE, because the best-paid finance directors are in larger groups where the role is the CFO in everything but name.
It helps to know what public data says, so long as you read it for what it is. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of USD 166,570 for financial managers in May 2025, with the highest-paid ten per cent earning more than USD 323,270, and projects employment to grow 10 per cent from 2025 to 2035. It describes the typical route in as a bachelor's degree plus five years or more in a related occupation, and names chief financial officer as an advancement path. The occupation covers controllers, treasurers and other finance managers at every size of employer, so it describes a broad group and not a finance director in a large business.
In the UK, the Office for National Statistics reports in Employee earnings in the UK: 2025 median gross annual earnings of GBP 39,039 for full-time employees in April 2025 (provisional), and notes that managers, directors and senior officials saw a 6.7 per cent rise in median weekly earnings for full-time jobs. Its interactive chart lets you compare annual earnings across occupations. Neither source substitutes for a benchmark built on mandates at director scope, which is what the table above is.
Five things, in roughly this order of force.
Size and complexity of the business. Turnover matters, but complexity matters more: a multi-entity group with intercompany flows, several currencies and a debt structure is a larger job than a single-entity business of the same revenue.
Listed, private or private-equity-owned. Listed and private-equity-backed businesses ask more of the finance director, in reporting, covenants and exit preparation, and are far more likely to offer a long-term incentive.
Board seat. A finance director who is a statutory director carries legal accountability that a divisional director does not. That is priced.
Ownership of the hard parts. A role that owns treasury, financial planning and analysis and investor or lender relationships is priced above one that administers a process set elsewhere. The same structural question sets the CFO number one level up.
Sector. Financial services and energy pay above the band for equivalent scope. Consumer, healthcare and not-for-profit pay below it.
In the UAE the effect of scope is easy to see.
| UAE finance director profile | Typical total annual package (AED) |
|---|---|
| Single market, controlling and reporting remit | 800k to 1.1m |
| Single market, owns planning, treasury and board reporting | 1.0m to 1.3m |
| Regional, multi-market | 1.2m to 1.6m |
These sit inside the AED 800,000 to 1.6 million range above. The top of the range overlaps with the bottom of the CFO band, which is the pattern to expect when the remit is regional.
| Component | Typical shape | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Base salary | Half to two thirds of total reward | The anchor for every later increase |
| Annual bonus | Commonly 20 to 40 per cent of base | Tied to company results and a handful of finance deliverables |
| Long-term incentive | Present in listed and private-equity-backed businesses, inconsistent elsewhere | The largest driver of five-year divergence between similar offers |
| Benefits | Healthcare, pension and allowances; in the Gulf, housing, schooling and annual flights | Lifts real take-home well above base |
| Tax treatment | Material by market; no personal income tax in the UAE | Decides what the package is worth in net terms |
When you compare two offers, the long-term incentive is where the difference usually lives and the line most people read least carefully. Our guides to converting a total reward package into one comparable number and to equity compensation explain how to value it.

See my market value →For a GCC reader, the finance ladder in the UAE is clearer than in most markets because the seats are distinct. JOH Partners market data puts a finance manager at AED 360,000 to 600,000, a senior finance manager at AED 550,000 to 850,000, a finance director at AED 800,000 to 1.6 million, a single-market CFO at AED 1.2 million to 2.2 million and a regional or group CFO at AED 2.0 million to 3.5 million. The steepest escalations sit at the two transitions that matter: finance manager to finance director, and finance director to CFO.
The benefits layer is a second reason a Gulf package reads differently from a home-market one. In a senior UAE package the cash-equivalent value of housing, schooling and flights is often AED 300,000 to 700,000, and it never appears in a base comparison. Our guides to total compensation beyond base salary in the GCC and to what you are worth in the 2026 UAE market set out how much of a senior package sits outside the headline.
The step up is a different seat, not a pay rise on the same job. In its piece on the private equity CFO, JOH Partners describes the move from finance director to portfolio CFO as a step up and not a lateral move, one that asks for backbone, breadth and commercial instinct, because the CFO reports to a controlling sponsor and works to an exit clock that starts at deal close.
That is a useful test for your own next move. Does the role report to the chief executive or the sponsor? Does it own the story the numbers tell, and not only the numbers? Does it sit in conversations about capital allocation? If the answer to all three is no, the job is being priced as a finance director whatever the card says. Our guide to director versus VP versus manager sets out how the levels differ, and our guide to the Managing Director title shows why a title is a poor guide to pay.
Three checks, in order.
First, benchmark against scope, not title. Remit, markets and ownership of treasury and planning are what the number follows.
Second, compare total package, never base. In the Gulf the benefits layer is worth several hundred thousand dirhams that never appear in a base comparison, and in listed and private-equity-backed businesses the long-term incentive is the line that decides the offer.
Third, assume drift if you have not been market-tested in three years. Internal increments follow internal budgets, and a gap opens quietly. Our guide to how to negotiate an executive job offer covers the sequence once you know the number, and the rest of our Salary & Market Data writing covers the other seats role by role, including the sibling guide to HR director salary.
