What the Technology Director Seat Pays in the US, UK and UAE

The key insight:

In technology, the title tells you almost nothing about the pay. The estate you run, the risk you carry and who you report to tell you almost everything.

Ask what an IT director earns and you will get a wide answer, because the title covers very different jobs. At one company it is the person who runs a service desk and a handful of projects. At another it is the executive who owns a regulated estate, a cyber risk register and a nine-figure transformation. The salary follows the job, not the label.

This guide prices the IT director seat by market, places it between head of IT and CIO, explains what moves the package within the band and sets out the route from IT director to CIO. The benchmarks come from the executive search mandates JOH Partners runs, and the Gulf is covered in its own section. If you want your own number placed against these bands, Your market value compares your package against scope and sector, not just title. You can also take the free Leadership Psychometric if the real question is whether you are ready for the next seat.

What an IT director is paid, market by market

An IT director sits in the function or divisional director tier. The table shows total annual package, meaning base plus bonus plus the cash-equivalent value of benefits, for a director with real responsibility. These are JOH Partners benchmarks for 2026, and they are the same bands published in our director and executive salary guide.

MarketFunction or divisional director (where an IT director sits)
United StatesUSD 165,000 to 300,000
United KingdomGBP 95,000 to 150,000
SingaporeSGD 170,000 to 325,000
AustraliaAUD 165,000 to 320,000
United Arab EmiratesAED 700,000 to 1.6m

The band is wide on purpose. Inside it, the position of an IT director depends on the estate and the risk, covered below. Above it sits the CIO. JOH Partners benchmarks a Chief Information Officer at USD 300,000 to 550,000, GBP 170,000 to 300,000 and AED 1.2m to 2.4m, and an operational Chief Technology Officer at USD 350,000 to 650,000, GBP 200,000 to 380,000 and AED 1.4m to 2.8m. The bands meet or overlap rather than stack neatly: in the US the director band tops out where the CIO band begins, in the UK there is a gap between GBP 150,000 and GBP 170,000, and in the UAE they overlap between AED 1.2m and 1.6m. The most useful way to read your position is how close you are to the entry point of the seat above.

IT director, head of IT and CIO: where the title sits

The three titles overlap more than most. Use the table as a guide to scope rather than a rule.

TitleTypical scopeReports toPay position
Head of ITA team or service area; run and supportIT director, CFO or COOBelow the director band
IT directorA technology function across several teams; budget and risk; sometimes a business unitCIO, COO, CFO or chief executiveFunction director band
CIOThe whole internal information estate; executive table presenceChief executive or boardCIO band

Public frameworks show how unsettled the language is. The UK government's Digital and Data Profession Capability Framework has no IT director role at all. It lists chief digital and information officer, chief data officer, chief information security officer and chief technology officer, which tells you that the senior technology ladder is organised by accountability, not by the label IT director. Our JOH Partners view on the CIO role, the pay and the board view makes the same point from the board side: the reporting line signals how seriously a company treats the seat.

What moves an IT director's package

Four factors move the number inside the band. They matter more than years in the role.

Cyber accountability. An IT director who owns the security posture, rather than handing it to a separate security chief, carries personal and regulatory exposure. That tends to price at the top of the band, and often marks the step towards CIO pay.

Cloud migration and infrastructure change. A director who has led a large migration, with the budget and the outcome attached, has evidence the market pays for. The premium is for the scale you can name, such as the number of applications moved or the run cost removed.

ERP and enterprise transformation scope. Owning a major ERP or finance and supply chain platform change puts you in front of the chief financial officer and the board. The more of the business your programme touches, the more it pays.

Sector and regulated estate. Financial services, healthcare and government-adjacent businesses price technology leadership higher, because the cost of failure is higher. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the same pattern in public data. Its entry on computer and information systems managers reports a May 2025 median wage of USD 175,140, with the highest medians in information (USD 200,510) and finance and insurance (USD 182,510).

Why public data reads lower than search data

Public figures are useful and incomplete. The BLS figure covers all computer and information systems managers in the United States, at every level, and is a wage rather than a total package. It will read lower than a director benchmark because it excludes bonus, long-term incentive and benefits at the senior end, and because it includes many first-line managers. The BLS also lists five years or more of related experience as typical for the group, which is an entry point, not a ceiling.

In the UK, the Office for National Statistics reported in Employee earnings in the UK: 2026 that median gross annual earnings for full-time employees were GBP 40,911 in April 2026. That is a measure of all jobs and it cannot tell you what a technology director is paid, because the median is built for the whole workforce. For senior packages, the useful comparator is executive search data on roles of similar scope, which is what the JOH Partners bands above represent. Our guide to director, VP and manager titles explains how the levels shift between companies.

IT director pay in the UAE and the Gulf

JOH Partners benchmarks the function or divisional director tier in the UAE at AED 700,000 to 1.6m, a CIO at AED 1.2m to 2.4m and an operational CTO at AED 1.4m to 2.8m.

Two features change how a Gulf package compares with the others in the table. First, the UAE government portal states that the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, so gross sits close to net. Second, senior packages commonly add housing, schooling and annual flights, which can take the cash-equivalent value of the benefits layer into the hundreds of thousands of dirhams. Our guides to total compensation beyond base salary in the GCC and to salary benchmarking in the UAE set out how to compare it properly, and senior compensation negotiation in the Gulf covers the allowances and gratuity mechanics outside base. Compare a Gulf package with a home-market one on net value including benefits, not on the headline figure.

The route from IT director to CIO

The step from IT director to CIO is a change of seat, not a bigger version of the same job. Three things usually separate them.

Moving from running technology to being accountable for the information estate. A CIO answers for the enterprise's data, systems and information risk, often directly to a board or audit committee.

Business fluency. A CIO talks to the chief executive and the chief financial officer in the language of margin, risk and growth, not tickets and uptime.

A leadership team, not only a function. The CIO builds and leads directors of their own. The IT director who has hired and developed that bench is the credible successor.

If this is your route, test your readiness against what the CIO seat will demand. The Leadership Psychometric is a 50-question leadership profile scoring five dimensions: Vision Thinking, Execution Drive, Influencing Power, People Intelligence and Composure. A CIO seat usually leans on Influencing Power and Composure more than a director seat does. You can see what the profile covers on the public Leadership Psychometric page. Our overview of career progression and guide to management skills at senior level cover the wider move, and if you are weighing an offer, our guide to negotiating an executive job offer sets out the sequence. Key takeaways

  • JOH Partners benchmarks the function or divisional director tier, where an IT director sits, at USD 165,000 to 300,000 in the US, GBP 95,000 to 150,000 in the UK and AED 700,000 to 1.6m in the UAE, as total annual package.
  • The IT director and CIO bands meet or overlap (US), leave a gap (UK) or overlap (UAE), so the best reading of your position is how close you are to the entry point of the seat above.
  • Cyber accountability, cloud migration, ERP and transformation scope, and a regulated sector move the package within the band more than years in the role.
  • Public wage data, such as the BLS figure, reads lower than search benchmarks because it excludes variable pay and includes first-line managers.
  • The step to CIO is a change of seat: accountability for the whole estate, business fluency and a leadership team of your own.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an IT director earn?
JOH Partners benchmarks the function or divisional director tier, which is where an IT director sits, at USD 165,000 to 300,000 in the United States, GBP 95,000 to 150,000 in the United Kingdom, SGD 170,000 to 325,000 in Singapore, AUD 165,000 to 320,000 in Australia and AED 700,000 to 1.6 million in the UAE, as total annual package. Where an IT director runs a large regulated estate with cyber accountability, the package moves toward the top of the band and towards CIO pay.
Is an IT director paid more than a head of IT?
Usually yes. A head of IT typically runs a team or a single service area, while an IT director owns a function across several teams with a budget and a place at the leadership table. The titles are used inconsistently, so benchmark on scope: budget, headcount, risk owned and reporting line.
What is the difference between an IT director and a CIO?
A CIO owns the internal information estate and sits at the executive table, usually with a direct line to the chief executive or an audit committee. An IT director typically runs technology below that level or in a business unit. JOH Partners benchmarks a CIO at USD 300,000 to 550,000, GBP 170,000 to 300,000 and AED 1.2 million to 2.4 million.
What increases an IT director's salary most?
Five things: owning cybersecurity accountability, leading a major cloud migration, leading an ERP or transformation programme, running a large regulated estate in a sector such as financial services, and reporting directly to the chief executive or board. Sector and scale matter more than the title.
What do IT directors earn in the UAE?
JOH Partners benchmarks the function or divisional director tier in the UAE at AED 700,000 to 1.6 million in total annual package, with a CIO at AED 1.2 million to 2.4 million. The UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, according to the UAE government portal, and senior packages commonly add housing, schooling and annual flights.
