The key insight:

A Marketing Director who owns a brand budget and one who owns a pipeline number can share a title and sit a hundred thousand apart. The number follows what the board measures, not what the door says.

A Marketing Director is one of the harder senior roles to benchmark, and the reason is not seniority. It is that the same title covers jobs a board would price very differently. One director runs brand, positioning and communications on a budget the board reviews twice a year. Another owns a customer acquisition number the board tracks weekly. They share a job title and little else.

This guide sets out what JOH Partners benchmarks for a Marketing Director's total package in the United States, United Kingdom, Singapore and the UAE, what moves the number, and what the step to Chief Marketing Officer is worth. It deals with the director seat only; for the step above, see our benchmarks for Chief Marketing Officer pay.

What a Marketing Director is paid, market by market

The table below gives total annual package, meaning base plus target bonus plus the cash-equivalent value of benefits, for a Marketing Director with a genuine function to run. These are JOH Partners benchmarks for 2026. Total package assumes reasonable attainment against target where a variable element exists; it is a planning figure, not a guaranteed sum.

MarketBase salaryTotal package
United StatesUSD 140,000 to 235,000USD 175,000 to 320,000
United KingdomGBP 80,000 to 125,000GBP 100,000 to 165,000
SingaporeSGD 150,000 to 250,000SGD 180,000 to 340,000
United Arab EmiratesAED 520,000 to 1.1mAED 750,000 to 1.7m

These bands sit inside the generic functional-director range in our guide to director salary and executive compensation, at the upper end of it, which is what you would expect for a function that is both commercial and board-visible. They sit below the Chief Marketing Officer bands, because the director does not hold an executive committee seat.

Two public reference points help with scale, with a caution. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median of USD 165,780 for advertising, promotions and marketing managers in 2025, projects employment growth of 6 per cent from 2025 to 2035 and about 36,300 openings a year. In the UK, the Office for National Statistics puts median full-time earnings at GBP 39,039 in April 2025, so a Marketing Director at the bottom of the band above earns more than two and a half times the national median. Neither is a benchmark for this seat: the first spans every level of marketing management, and the second spans every occupation. They describe the floor and the context, and the director bands above describe the seat.

What moves a Marketing Director's pay

Brand versus performance. A director who owns brand, positioning and communications is priced closest to a senior functional director: a higher base as a share of the total and a modest bonus. A director who owns performance marketing or demand generation, measured on pipeline, acquisition cost or revenue contribution, is priced closer to a sales leader, with a lower base and a larger variable component. Our guide to sales director pay sets out that logic in detail. The practical test is the first question to ask of any offer: which number does the board hold this person to?

B2B versus B2C. B2B marketing directors tend to be closer to the revenue line, because marketing's contribution to pipeline is measurable and the sales cycle is long enough for the function to be accountable for it. B2C directors in consumer-facing sectors are more often judged on brand health and share, which sits further from a single number. Neither is better paid by default; they are paid on different things.

Budget and team. The market prices what is managed, not only the title held. A director running a large budget and a multi-market team is a different proposition from one running a lean in-house function.

Sector and stage. Technology, consumer and financial services businesses generally sit at the top of the bands, because brand and growth marketing are closer to the core value driver. A scale-up building a brand from a small base can pay a premium for the right operator, with part of it in equity. An established business defending a position is more likely to pay in cash and bonus.

The step to Chief Marketing Officer

The step from Marketing Director to CMO is one of the larger pay jumps in the function, and the reason is mandate, not seniority. A CMO sits on the executive committee, answers to the board for a number, and typically owns a broader remit that may include revenue-linked outcomes. JOH Partners benchmarks the CMO total package at USD 380,000 to 700,000 in the US and AED 1.5 million to 2.8 million in the UAE. That is a considerably higher band than the director bands above, and the full breakdown is in our CMO guide.

The practical implication for a director aiming at the seat: the pay step follows the mandate step. A director who has already carried a revenue-linked number, and who has presented to a board rather than only to an executive, is far closer to the CMO band than one who has run a larger brand budget. JOH Partners' view of what a Gulf board actually budgets for the CMO seat is a useful read before you decide how to position for it.

The Gulf: what the UAE package really contains

The UAE number needs reading differently. Personal income in the UAE is not subject to income tax, so the headline figure sits much closer to take-home pay than in the US or UK. A senior package typically carries a benefits layer on top of base: housing, schooling for children and annual flights. The cash-equivalent value of that layer can be material, which is why the same title can show different total packages for similar scope.

Marketing Director roles in the Gulf also often carry a regional remit across several markets, with the language, regulatory and cultural complexity that brings. That is a scope difference, not a cost-of-living adjustment, and it is part of why the top of the UAE band reaches AED 1.7 million. Our guide to GCC total compensation beyond base salary sets out how much of a Gulf package sits outside the headline.

Non-cash terms deserve the same attention. A senior package includes entitlements that never appear in a salary band, from statutory leave to what an employer adds above it, and our guide to maternity leave in the UAE shows what the law gives you and what is worth negotiating above it. For how Gulf packages are structured compared with London and Singapore, JOH Partners' analysis of senior executive pay across the three markets sets out why the headline figure misleads.

Reading your own number

Benchmark against your scope, not your title. Establish whether you are being held to a brand outcome, a revenue-linked number, or both. Compare total package, then check the guaranteed share. And if your package was set before your scope grew, assume it may have drifted, and test it against what the role now owns.

If you want your own package set against the right comparison rather than a generic average, Your market value on AssessYou prices on role, level and market; create a free account and run it. And because how a board prices a marketing leader depends as much on how it reads your commercial judgement as on the work, it is worth knowing your own profile: take the free Leadership Psychometric, a 50-question leadership profile built by executive recruiters, and see where you stand before the conversation begins.

Key takeaways

  • JOH Partners benchmarks a Marketing Director total package at USD 175,000 to 320,000 in the US, GBP 100,000 to 165,000 in the UK, SGD 180,000 to 340,000 in Singapore and AED 750,000 to 1.7 million in the UAE.
  • Brand-led and performance-led directors are priced differently. Ask which number the board holds the role to before comparing any offer to any range.
  • B2B versus B2C, budget and team size, and sector and stage explain most of the remaining spread within each band.
  • The step to Chief Marketing Officer is one of the larger pay jumps in the function, and it follows the mandate step: an executive committee seat and a broader, often revenue-linked remit.
  • In the UAE, read the benefits layer as well as the headline figure. Housing, schooling and flights can move the total materially, and non-cash terms such as leave above the statute are worth negotiating.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average Marketing Director salary?
As a total package, JOH Partners benchmarks a Marketing Director at USD 175,000 to 320,000 in the United States, GBP 100,000 to 165,000 in the United Kingdom, SGD 180,000 to 340,000 in Singapore and AED 750,000 to 1.7 million in the UAE. Base salary typically runs at roughly three quarters to four fifths of the total, with the balance in bonus and, in some businesses, long-term incentives.
How much does a Marketing Director earn compared with a CMO?
A Chief Marketing Officer is priced materially higher. JOH Partners benchmarks a CMO total package at USD 380,000 to 700,000 in the US, GBP 200,000 to 380,000 in the UK and AED 1.5 million to 2.8 million in the UAE. The step up reflects an executive committee seat and a broader mandate, which is why a move from Marketing Director to CMO is often one of the largest single pay steps in the function.
What makes one Marketing Director paid more than another?
Four things explain most of the spread: whether the role owns brand, performance or both; the size of the budget and team; whether the business is B2B or B2C; and whether the director owns a revenue-linked number such as pipeline or customer acquisition. A director measured on pipeline is priced closer to a sales leader, with a larger variable component.
Is a Marketing Director paid more in the UAE?
Usually, in total package terms, because UAE personal income is not subject to income tax and senior packages carry a benefits layer of housing, schooling and flights. JOH Partners benchmarks a UAE Marketing Director at AED 750,000 to 1.7 million. The benefits layer, not only the headline figure, is where a Gulf offer needs to be read carefully.
Should I compare base salary or total package?
Total package, always, but check what share is guaranteed. A brand-led Marketing Director usually has a higher base as a share of total than one who owns a performance or pipeline target. Compare like with like: a base-heavy offer and a variable-heavy offer can have the same headline and very different risk.
